ER316 and ER316L are types of stainless steel filler metals classified under AWS A5.9 / ASME SFA-5.9. The designation “316L” refers to a *low-carbon* variant (C ~0.03%) that minimizes the risk of intergranular carbide precipitation. The typical chemical makeup consists of approximately 18-20% Chromium (Cr), 11-14% Nickel (Ni), 2.0-3.0% Molybdenum (Mo), 1.0-2.5% Manganese (Mn), and 0.30-0.65% Silicon (Si). The maximum levels for Carbon are around ~0.03% for 316L (higher for 316), with Phosphorus and Sulfur each capped at about 0.03%, and Copper can go up to ~0.75%. ([Material Welding][1])
Weld metal created with ER316 / ER316L showcases impressive toughness, solid tensile strength, and significant elongation. Here are some typical values: * Tensile strength: **86,000 psi** (~590-600 MPa) ([Weldtool Technologies][2]) * Yield strength (0.2% offset): **58,000 psi** (~400-410 MPa) ([Material Welding][1]) * Elongation often falls between 30-40% under standard room temperature conditions. ([Weldtool Technologies][2]) Thanks to its lower carbon content, ER316L is better at resisting sensitization, which enhances the welds’ resistance to intergranular corrosion. ([Material Welding][1])

AWS class 316/316L for MIG and TIG welding wire or rod requires careful packing with high standard materials for safe delivery in order to prevent defect and contamination during shipping. Although we always try to go for on-time shipment. We prioritize the satisfaction of our customers through effective transportation options. In this effort all vital information concerning the product is disclosed to the customer through the accompanying data upon delivery, so they may rest assured of the transparency facility.
ER316 / ER316L filler rod and wire are commonly employed for welding austenitic stainless steels, especially in situations where corrosion resistance—particularly against chlorides and other aggressive environments—is crucial. Typical applications include marine settings, chemical and petrochemical processing equipment, the food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical manufacturing, architectural and decorative stainless structures, heat exchangers, processing tanks, and piping. Its excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperatures also make it suitable for conditions involving moderate heat. The low carbon “L” version (ER316L) is often the go-to choice
